Fighting Silence (On the Ropes #1) by Aly Martinez
I’ve always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn’t a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.
You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.
They both happened anyway.
Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.
Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.
I think that’s the sound I’ll miss the most.
Alright, don’t mind me, I may never recover from the emotional roller coaster of these books! They literally make you feel everything as if you are there. Your are rooting for them, pissed at them, crying for them, and everything in between. So, I commend you Aly Martinez for your well written books.
I am reviewing the series as a whole, while they can be read as a standalone each, I strongly suggest everyone read them all. The series follows the three Page brothers and each book is told from each brothers perspective. While they all have been through some crazy shit together and individually; each book is completely different and doesn’t just repeat it’s plot in a different variation, which I am super pleased about.
I will say, the first book is my favorite; you think it’s all over then boom, its not and the story continues. While you could assume books 2-3 go ‘down hill’ from there, but they are still incredible. All the characters had great depth and personal growth. I kid you not, I stayed up till 3 in the morning reading the first book, unable to put the book (kindle) down. I woke up in the morning, continued in my reading.
I love the diversity in the characters. I don’t want to give away anything, but there are characters with physical disabilities and genetic diseases and contains homelessness, violence, criminals, etc. Warning! There are definitely some triggers throughout the series including violence and sexual assault. I mentioned these books are pretty heavy so please make sure you are in the right head space before you read anything.
I really do recommend these books. Incredibly moving and motivational and heart wrenching all at the same time. The On the Ropes series is available on Kindle Unlimited. Give these books a try and let me know what you guys think!
